CASTLE ENTRANCE-BIG SUR VIEW-ELEPHANT SEALS

OCEAN VIEW OVER BIG SUR ON THE WAY TO MONTERREY
We arrived at Monterrey in the late evening. Stopped along the way to take pictures. Watch the elephant seals. The view along HWY 1 is indescribable. The twist and turns, over 90 miles of coastline mountains left you breathless at times. We traveled about 25 miles per hour. It took us about 3 1/2 hours to travel the 90 miles. It seemed to take forever to get to Monterrey. The map gives you an idea of the road.

"Originally inhabited by the Esselen, Salinan and Ohlone Native Americans, Big Sur was first settled by the Spanish in the 1830s, but developed its first large settlements due to the Gold Rush. The lumber industry thrived in the late 1800s in Big Sur, despite the difficulty of reaching the area; the population of Big Sur was greater at that time than it is today. The three-day, dangerous overland journey to Monterrey meant most supplies were brought in and goods shipped out by ocean, rather than by road. The construction of Highway One in the 1930s transformed Big Sur, making its beauty accessible to all."

Checked in at the El Castell Motel in Monterrey. Tomorrow we will talk about Monterrey.
